Seneca Village, Manhattan's first significant community of African American property owners, existed from 1825 through 1857. It was located between 82nd and 89th Streets and Seventh and Eighth Avenues. Today, this area is part of Central Park. The site results from a project for high-school students. It features primary documents including the New York State Manuscript Census for 1855; birth and death records; church registers and records; newspaper articles; political cartoons, drawings, illustrations, photographs, and map. There is also a bibliography.
