Historic Postcards of Alabama

By

Wade, Diane

The Historic Postcards of Alabama digital resource represents a sample from the Sturdivant Hall Collection held at the William Stanley Hoole Special Collections Library at The University of Alabama. The title of the collection is taken from the Selma, Alabama homeplace occupied by decendents of the Jones, Walker, Reese, and Sturdivant families. The Sturdivant Hall postcards depict a vast range of domestic and foreign scenes. Often, they are the only remaining images of structures destroyed long ago. The Alabama postcards digitized for this project, 234 in all, fall within the years 1900 to 1920. The images are accessible through a Location Index and an Image Map of the state of Alabama. The site also includes a Teaching Resource to facilitate the use of these historic images in the classroom. This resource is an exploratory project; varying image sizes and resolutions are used. Users should be aware that some type of graphics helper application is necessary to view the images.
