Center for History and New Media (CHNM)

In the past decade new media and new technologies have begun to transform even the ancient discipline of history. CD-ROMs and the World Wide Web challenge historians to rethink the ways that they research, write, present, and teach about the past. The Center for History and New Media was established in the fall of 1994 to contribute to and reflect upon this transformation and challenge. CHNM produces historical works in new media, tests the effectiveness of these products in the classroom, and reflects critically on the promises and pitfalls of new media in historical practice. CHNM's resources are designed to benefit professional historians, high school teachers, and students of history. Many CHNM projects are undertaken in collaboration with the American Social History Project (ASHP) at the Center for Media and Learning at The Graduate Center of The City University of New York (CUNY). The site offers a linklist, a teaching section, and essays on "New Media and History. There is also a detailed description and links to CHNM's current projects.
