History

"The SRC's history goes back to 1953, when a coordinating body of researchers on Slavic-Eurasian studies was created in Hokkaido University. This body was officially recognized as a part of the Faculty of Law in 1955, and named the Slavic Institute. Since 1978, when the institute acquired an independent status within the University given a new name, Slavic Research Center, it has functioned as a national center to coordinate the area studies in Japan and to serve also as a liaison between Japanese and oversea scholars."
