The periodical Historische Literatur was founded in 2002 by the editors of the online-forum H-Soz-u-Kult as a quarterly review journal in Clio-online's publication series. The name of Historische Literatur was chosen because it best describes the journal's program: reviews of current historical scholarship and poignant review essays on major themes. 

Historische Literatur was also an experiment: the journal - or, rather, its contents - was published in multiple ways, as a hybrid form until 2008. The reviews and articles included in the quarterly journal are written for H-Soz-u-Kult and were distributed to its subscribers via mailing lists as well as the websites of the Berlin-based H-Soz-u-Kult  and the Michigan-based H-Net. Now, each quarter, the reviews are bundled and archived in an electronical form.
